Adventures Near Honolulu

There is something magical about the white sandy beaches and tropical landscapes of the island of Oahu. Honolulu, the state’s capital, is perfectly situated with easy access to all the island has to offer. Whether you are looking for a relaxing day at the beach or an adrenaline filled jungle expedition, Oahu has something for every adventurer. Here are our favorite adventures near Honolulu!

Kaneohe Bay Sandbar

This attraction is only 30 minutes away from downtown Honolulu. The Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is located about a mile offshore and is a super fun area to explore by kayak, SUP, or boat. One can only reach the sandbar by water. Adventurers can launch their vessels in the bay and then travel a mile to the sandbar. Once there, you can explore the many reefs surrounding the sandbar or have a picnic in the sand. Make sure you bring reef-friendly sunscreen, there is no shade out on the sandbar!

Ka’ua Crater

The trailhead for this epic hike is located just 7 miles from Honolulu center. Attractions along this hike include three waterfalls, amazing views of the city, as well as a breathtaking crater. Adventurers can choose to continue past the third waterfall for a more strenuous and adrenaline inducing experience. Those looking for a more mellow hike can choose their distance and turn back at any time. We recommend bringing more water than you think you will need, hydration is key!

He’eia State Park

Within He’eia State Park there is so much for the eco-centric adventurer to explore. The main attraction is the He’eia Pond. Don’t let the name fool you, this ‘pond’ is a massive expanse of water traditionally used for fishing. The pond is an amazingly unique aquaculture feature of the Hawaiian Islands. The coastal pond was created many years ago to herd fish into a closed area where both saltwater and freshwater mix. You can learn more about this traditional fishing practice HERE. Along with the pond you can tour the park to see all the unique flora and fauna!

White Plains Beach

If you want to spend the day at the beach but  are looking to escape the crowds at Waikiki, head to White Plains Beach (around 30 minutes from Honolulu). This beach is long with a variety of different surf breaks to choose from for those looking to try their hand at SUP or surfing. The exposed reef break makes it a reliable source of gentle, slow breaking waves year round. Its large size and easy waves are perfect for a family day at the beach.
